MuMaQ: Music, Maths & Quantum physics

Research on the connection between Music and the World of Quanta in Education

The connection between Music and Science is a very old one. Modern physicists still refer to it as an important motivating factor in their work. Why isn’t it used more in physics education? The authors develope a path to introduce quantum physics in secondary schools by the way of the musical analogy. Indeed, just as discrete musical intervals on a string can be heard, the intervals between oscillating quantum fields can be observed as particles. This might open a way to introduce quantum physics and reintroduce at the same time the importance of beauty in physics education.

Science and Mathematics Education

Continuing Education

Every school year the Centre of Subject Matter Teaching organizes continuing training for secondary school teachers in mathematics, natural sciences, physics, chemistry and biology. During 2009-2010 the Centre organized continuing education for the Flemish Ministry of Education in Science Teaching.

One can find the program on – in Dutch – on : vorming-onderzoek-dienstverlening

Members of the group give lectures on Science and Mathematics Education in corporation with various organizations like KVCV (Royal Flemish Chemical Society), Vob-Velewe (Flemish Society of Science Teachers), Freudenthal Institute of Science and Mathematics Education (Nationale Wiskunde Dagen),.…

Two Members of the group are in the redaction of “Uitwiskeling”, a journal for Mathematics Education in Flanders. See http://www.uitwiskeling.be

Science Communication

The Centre and the Teacher Training organizes various actions for science communication.

Subject Matter Teaching: Key Project

What are the keys of good subject matter teaching? What are standards of quality PCK? Answers to these questions are searched together with partners of and funding from the School of Education University K.U.Leuven

One can find a presentation about intermediate results given on the PCK Summer School of the School of Education K.U.Leuven http://www.schoolofeducation.eu/nieuws-en-agenda/afgelopen-evenementen/Sessie2_Vakdidactiek.ppt
